Bees & Butterflies

While I think this years butterfly count is down, certainly on last year, there are a few around. Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, Cabbage White of course...but also the Scotch Argus. As I said before the Scotch Argus was a new one for me this year, and there are a lot of them about. I just counted 6+ in one small area of the plot just now. So, it is certainly a good year for them at least?

Back in the very early part of the year I made more raised beds in front of the house for growing various crops. They have done very well, not surprisingly as they face the sun for most of the day and are on the warmest side of the house. As some of the crops have gone to seed - Mustards and Coriander expecially and as the Oregano has come into flower, these plants are attracting an enormous amount of bees, wasps and hover-flies of all types. Along with the Fushia, Lavender, Foxgloves and the Nasturtiums plus Courgette flowers, it is not only a riot of colour, but also of scent and the business of these insects flying about.
